Five Tower Defence Mistakes I Keep Making

May 13, 2026 · Lukas Meinhardt

Tower defence games love to punish habits, and I've collected plenty of bad ones. The most common: overbuilding at the start. It feels safe to place five towers on wave one, but you usually strangle your economy and can't afford the upgrade that actually matters at wave eight.

Second mistake is ignoring range overlap. A tower is only worth its cost if enemies spend real time inside its reach. I used to sprinkle towers evenly across the map like seasoning. Now I stack them where the path bends and enemies slow down.

Third, I chase damage numbers and forget crowd control. A single slow tower can double the value of everything behind it. In most games, control beats raw damage until very late.

Fourth is not reading the wave preview. Almost every good tower defence tells you what's coming. I ignored it for years and then complained about surprise flying units. Read the preview, adjust, save yourself the restart.

Last one is emotional: rebuilding too late. If your layout is failing, the fix is usually to tear something down early, not to keep patching it. Learning to accept a wasted tower and move on made me a much better player.
