The Upgrade Order That Wins Late Waves

The Upgrade Order That Wins Late Waves

July 10, 2026 · Lukas Meinhardt

In most tower defence games, the losing player and the winning player often have the same towers. The difference is upgrade timing. Spending in the wrong order leaves you strong against the wrong wave at the wrong moment.

My general rule: get one tower to a functional tier before spreading out. Two half-built towers usually lose to one fully built one, because damage scaling tends to be non-linear. A single strong tower punches above two weak ones.

Prioritise control upgrades early if the game offers them. Slow, freeze, and stun effects multiply the value of everything else. Once your slow tower is up, your damage towers effectively get free extra shots per enemy.

Save a resource cushion before boss waves. If you burn everything on the wave before, you'll have nothing left to answer a boss surprise. Playing slightly under your means keeps options open, and options win late waves.
